About

Born and raised in Qatar, Abdullah Almulla moved to the UK at 17 and later to New Zealand – experiences that shaped his global perspective and his ability to read the nuances of culture and place. He began working in film in 2013, starting as a production assistant and gradually taking on roles as a producer, writer, and director.

His short films reflect this layered worldview. “A Journey to/from Love” was screened at over 20 international festivals, while other works are featured at the Qatar National Museum. These stories are intimate, political, and often rooted in the quiet details of everyday life.

Abdullah earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Canterbury, majoring in political science and cinema studies with a minor in anthropology. His education sharpened his interest in the mechanics of power, media, and human connection, threads that now run through his creative and journalistic work.

Currently, he splits his time between his role at Qatar News Agency and his graduate studies at NYU. His move into journalism is not a departure from filmmaking, but a continuation: a way to use the camera not just to tell stories, but to reveal truth and serve the public.

When off set, he enjoys performing in community theatre, playing board games with friends, and doting on his cat Dobby.
